Item An empiric validation of linguistic features in machine learning models for fake news detection(2023-07-28) Puraivan, Eduardo; Venegas, René; Riquelme, FabiánThe diffusion of fake news is a growing problem with a high and negative social impact. There are several approaches to address the detection of fake news. This work focuses on a hybrid approach based on functional linguistic features and machine learning. There are several recent works with this approach. However, there are no clear guidelines on which linguistic features are most appropriate nor how to justify their use. Furthermore, many classification results are modest compared to recent advances in natural language processing. Our proposal considers 88 features organized in surface information, part of speech, discursive characteristics, and readability indices. On a 42 677 news database, we show that the classification results outperform previous work, even outperforming state-of-the-art techniques such as BERT, reaching 99.99% accuracy. A proper selection of linguistic features is crucial for interpretability as well as the performance of the models. In this sense, our proposal contributes to the intentional selection of linguistic features, overcoming current technical issues. We identified 32 features that show differences between the type of news. The results are highly competitive in the classification and simple to implement and interpret.Item ANÁLISIS BIBLIOMÉTRICO SOBRE DESERCIÓN/RETENCIÓN ACADÉMICA EN EL PRIMER AÑO DE UNIVERSIDAD EN LA BASE DE DATOS SCOPUS(Bibliotecas. A study of higher education teachers in Chile(2022-07) Gaete-Peralta, Claudio; Tapia, Juan; Puraivan, EduardoThe objective of this research was to report the results of the application of the Attitude Scale about Professional Ethics, proposed by Hirsch, to a sample of higher education teachers in Chile and, based on this report, to perform an exploratory factor analysis to empirically verify the theoretical competencies that are part of this questionnaire. The research results showed that the scale presented high reliability, with a Cronbach's alpha value equal to 0.87. However, the exploratory factor analysis showed that the sample did not recognize the four theoretical competencies of the instrument. When analyzing each dimension separately, by means of factor analysis and reduction to one factor, the questions of the scale with the highest charges were identified. Among the research conclusions, it is suggested for future work to plan an experimental situation to adapt the scale from the theoretical construction, supported by an exploratory factor analysis.Item CLNews: The First Dataset of the Chilean Social Outbreak for Disinformation Analysis(2022-10-17) Providel, Eliana; Toro, Daniel; Riquelme, Fabián; Mendoza, Marcelo; Puraivan, EduardoDisinformation is one of the main threats that loom on social networks. Detecting disinformation is not trivial and requires training and maintaining fact-checking teams, which is labor-intensive. Recent studies show that the propagation structure of claims and user messages allows a better understanding of rumor dynamics. Despite these findings, the availability of verified claims and structural propagation data is low. This paper presents a new dataset with Twitter claims verified by fact-checkers along with the propagation structure of retweets and replies. The dataset contains verified claims checked during the Chilean social outbreak, which allows for studying the phenomenon of disinformation during this crisis. We study propagation patterns of verified content in CLNews, showing differences between false rumors and other types of content. Our results show that false rumors are more persistent than the rest of verified contents, reaching more people than truthful news and presenting low barriers of readability to users. The dataset is fully available and helps understand the phenomenon of disinformation during social crises being one of the first of its kind to be released. This article introduces a framework for the development of an emotion-based decision support tool for learning processes. As a case study, we consider undergraduate students starting their academic year virtually in the context of a pandemic. Through the application of the PANAS questionnaire and NLP techniques on free-text responses, students' emotions are automatically classified as positive and negative, as well as a level of basic emotions of the Plutchik model. The results allow to identify the most frequent sentiments in students. Also, they show concordances between both measurement instruments and a high capacity for the classification of emotions.
